It's all about the Points

What does everyone think about how the points are calculated? Erv thought it might be good to split the points for the top two player based on the difference in chip counts.
For example: Game 3 on 1/4/2008 finished
Mark (4/2) - 15 Points (5 * 3)
Brophy (2/4) - 12 Points (4 * 3)
Tim - 9 Points
Ethan - 2 Points
Mackenzie - 1 Points
Andrew - 0 Points
And with points based on chip counts...
Mark (4/2) - 14 Points (12 + 3*4/6)
Brophy (2/4) - 13 Points (12 + 3*2/6)
Tim - 9 Points
Ethan - 2 Points
Mackenzie - 1 Points
Andrew - 0 Points

And of course any changes the point formula would be voted on.
Lets here your thoughts...

This does seem to be a fairer way of breaking down the points for the two players that split at the end of a game. And I\'m pretty sure I can program around it.

I don\'t think it needs to be voted on. Currently in the rules it states that chip counts will be counted to correctly calculate the points. The way I read that rule is that if the chip count is 301 to 299, that basically they would have equal points. Since they split the money that way it seems to be the most consistant. If we base total 1st place points based on chip count, then you are going to have everyone play every game to the bitter end. On Friday night last game I was behind 278 to 322. I was assuming that since we were basically even, that we split the money even and split the points even (13.6 to 13.4) - based upon the rules that are stated in the 2008 rules section of the website. If the points are 15 to 12, then I have a decision to make as far as money vs points go. The flip side to this equation is that if we play to the bitter end for 1st place, then do we need to determine a set payout for 1st and 2nd place such as 2/3 of the $ for 1st and 1/3 for 2nd? Plus another negative for playing everything out is that we potentially run out of time for a 3rd game a lot of the time. I personally think it makes more sense to split the points as the money is split, then you really don\'t have to play beyond the top two positions. Plus I think this is how the rules currently read.

The rule may say sound like that but had there been an intention of splitting the top two players points that would have been explicitly pointed out in the rules and example and this was not the way points where calculated last year either. Anything that effects the way points are calculated should be voted on, in my opinion.

That is fine to vote, I was just pointing out that the rules already state that the points would be split. I assumed that\'s how it has always worked. Why else would the splits be posted? Since I joined mid season last year it was a little more difficult to determine how points were exactly calculated. Could we post the points on the historical page where it shows how everyone finished so that it becomes more transparent to everyone? I just like to have consistancy in the rules and currently there is not consistancy between the payouts and the points awarded. Kudos on the blog page, I like it!!!

I would like to better explain how I thought the split in points was supposed to work. Say you are playing a 6 person game, the points would be awarded as such 1st - 15 points (5*3) 2nd - 12 points (4*3) 3rd - 9 points (3*3) 4th - 2 point 5th - 1 point 6th - 0 point Now since we normally stop play once we get down to two players, technically we don\'t have an official 1st place (since neither player was knocked out). On the website it mentions that we keep track of splits for splitting the points. So I assumed that the final 3 points (the difference between 1st and 2nd place) would be divided as the split goes so....here are some examples of how I thought the point split would work for a 6 player game Game in which there ia a 5/1 split: Player 1 (5/1) - 14.5 (12 + 3*5/6) Player 2 (1/5) - 12.5 (12 + 3*1/6) Game in which played to the end: Player 1 (6/0) - 15 (12 + 3*6/6) Player 2 (0/6) - 12 (12 + 3*0/6) Now if the chip could had been even (300 chips to 300), then here is what the point values would be: Player 1 (3/3) - 13.5 (12 + 3*3/6) Player 2 (3/3) - 13.5 (12 + 3*3/6) Basically you are gettig credit for how many chips you have at the time play is stopped.

If we are going to split the points, then we should no longer chop at the end of the game... Had I known that, I would not have assented to a split at the end of the third game. I assumed I was getting the FULL first place points. That too is an unfair advantage to 1st place and a misinterpretation of rules... SO if we are going to split the points based on chips, then I will always play it out... or we SHOULD just play it out regardless. Until people understand the situation, first place should get full points because I doubt anyone assumed they were getting less.

I am fine with the previous two nights already played being kept as is, and splitting going forward. As I mentioned earlier had I known the points were not split, it would have effected my play on the last hand and also agreeing to split. Since it was basically even at that point I would have wanted to play on as well. I am also fine playing games out as I think the head to head experience is good to have. We may want to institute a predetermined $ split for 1st and 2nd like they do in tournaments. We also have to realize that adding 10-15 minutes or more for final showdowns could potentially impact the ability to have 3 games in a given night.

I guess what I am trying to say is that the eliminated players are not given points based on the remaining chips (considering they have none) SO that in turn should not affect the split for 1st and 2nd. If we go that route and award points based on chips, then I think people should be made aware of that clarification... I don\'t mind if people want to split that way if they know what it means, I will just be playing it out...

Nothing is set to change on how the points are calculated. We are just discussing what everyone thinks of the top two people splitting the difference of first and second place based on chips. And if it gets enough support I will create a poll to see if the majority agree\'s.

I say we make negative points for taking last... all this positive crap is making me sick... this tour seems to be too optimistic and the glass is half full and life is fair all that sappy crap... I mean why don\'t we all get little chihuahuas to put in our purses and be happy? I would rather have a pitbull tour that has a bite! Instead of Haus winning it all with 1,000,000 points 80 1st place finishes and 200 last place finishes and Tim with 999,999 with 79 first, 1 second, and 0 last place finishes...

Thot - How about if you request to play heads up and lose then you tie third place for points. ex. 5 player game where the 2nd place requested the heads up and loses 1st 10pts, 2nd 2pts, 3rd 2pts, 4th 1pts, 5th 0pts.

I\'m not going to code it so someone gets the same points as another level. Points will still be based on the position you finish.

I love how the points are working this year! It rewards a good night and penalizes a bad one... FAIRLY. Case in point, I had a really bad night last week and I am appropriately behind in points. And I can have a great night next week and be right back in it! working so far...
